The Song Dynasty created the “Porcelain Capital 瓷都” of China at Jingdezhen 景德镇, a city in Jiangxi province. This city began producing pottery even during the Warring States period. During Tang, it was already an important porcelain producing center. Zhao Heng 赵恒 (968–1022), who was Song Emperor Zhenzong 宋真宗 (reigned 997–1022), ordered all products of this city for use of the palace and named it “Jingdezhen 景德镇” in 1004, the first year of the Jingde 景德 Era. Since then, it has been the leading center of porcelain production in China, with half a dozen equally famous porcelain centers elsewhere in competition. Today, the city has a porcelain college and research institute. It is the center of China’s porcelain culture. Its products, especially the tea and dinner sets marked by the four Chinese characters wan shou wu jiang 万寿无疆 (thousands of years of long life without end), are seen the world over, becoming a symbol of Chinese culture.
